Arthur St, Surry Hills
Home, studio & 4 gardens.
Our house was big enough, but didn't take advantage of the
orientation or the garden. We did the obvious things. We
opened up to the garden and built a garage with a studio
above. The rear yard is heavily landscaped to provide a view
and visual separation between home and studio.
We have a pond in another courtyard which helps keep the
house cool, as does the insulation and mass of a roof
garden. The front yard is our fourth garden.
The ground floor has a front, cosy room and an open room at
the back. We move furniture back and forth in response to
weather and occasion.
The upper level remained unchanged, except for a bath in a
bay window off the front bedroom. The bath and bedrooms have
views of the roof garden.

The client brief was perfect. Get the layout and the
proportions right. Specify modest finishes and keep the
detailing direct and uncomplicated. Maximise the floorspace
given planning controls.
Floorspace surplus to the family's requirements allowed for
a second dwelling at the front.
The budget did allow for double glazing to a busy street,
doors to the rear garden that slide beyond the width of the
room, and excavation for off street parking.
I think it is appropriate.

Caerleon
Alterations & restoration of a heritage property
This significant house was designed in the Queen Anne Style
by Harry C Kent in Sydney and Maurice B Adams in London and
was constructed in 1886 for Charles Burton Fairfax. It is
appropriately listed as a heritage item by Woollahra
Council. It is also listed on the Register of the National
Estate and the Jubilee Register of the National Trust of
Australia.
A large part of the project concerned the restoration of the
home, but new work was carried out where original fabric had
already been altered. The original configuration of the
kitchen and associated rooms had been disturbed and so this
area was converted to a kitchen and family area to meet
contemporary expectations. The garage and pool area have
been rebuilt to reduce impact on the original house. New
openings connect the kitchen and family rooms and the pool
area. Upstairs, servant quarters have been re-organised to
provide rooms for teenagers.
Interventions are polite, ideally not conspicuous, and of a
standard appropriate to the house.
We worked happily and productively with the client, interior
designer Sally Greenaway and the builder. Landscape designer
Will Dangar completed the gardens.

Caerleon Gates
Reconfiguration & restoration of significant gates
The property had beautiful gates hung off sandstone
gateposts. Sadly the opening was too narrow for a vehicular
turning circle, especially if approaching from the west. We
moved one of the gateposts and relocated the gates further
up the drive. New gateposts were required so we designed new
cast iron posts with a palisade back to the original
gateposts.
Significant trees and their roots required careful design to
limit disturbance.
Gates were beautifully restored by Guido Gouveneur and the
new posts were cast in Wagga Wagga.

House RV, Bellevue Hill
Subtractions & alterations to a house
Additions & alterations to the garden
The existing house is unremarkable and sits over 5m above
street level. As the garage is presently located at the
level of the house, a driveway occupies most of the front
yard. There is almost no rear yard.
The objective of the project is to make a silk purse out of
a sow's ear. The advantage of the existing house is that it
is out of the ground and is in reasonable structural
condition. All work required on the house will directly
improve finishes and amenity. Moving the garage to street
level allows the area of the driveway to become garden. The
existing garage itself can be converted into a loggia
servicing the pool area. Minor structural adjustments to the
house improve layout and amenity.
Whilst harbour views are available from the upper living
room level, the main asset of the site are two large fig
trees. A Port Jackson fig is located on the slope down to
the street and a Hills fig is located in the Council area
in front of the property. The upper level is located at
the level of the canopies and proposed work takes
advantage of this condition.

House BV, Paddington
Additions & alterations to a terrace house
Our client involved us in the search for a property.
The final layout is almost identical to the first sketch
made prior to purchase.
The original house was thought to have been constructed in
the early 1880s. It had been the subject of alterations and
additions at the rear.
The proposal restores the facade and retains the general
layout of the main part of the house. The first floor rear
extensions has been reconstructed to match the original. The
remainder of the house is being constructed to a
contemporary standard.
The house steps down the site to connect to the garden. The
section brings daylight to the centre of the plan. Every
centimetre is exploited.
Our clients have been building it themselves with the
considerable assistance and experience of builder and
carpenter Barry Hesline.

The team from restaurant Moon Park took over a space
previously operated by Bourke St Bakery and designed by Meacham
Nockles McQualter. We agreed that a good fit out should not go into
landfill simply for the sake of novelty and so tweaked the space to
suit new requirements. A fine steel bar was added to the existing
counter, the kitchen was screened, acoustic treatment was installed,
existing lighting supplemented and furniture from Moon Park re-used.
The new colour scheme, inspired in part by Dancheong traditional
colours, was specified with Lymesmith.

Surry Hills Apartment
Conversion of the ground floor & sub-floor area of an
apartment building into a new apartment & home office
Perhaps counter-intuitively, the living rooms were placed
below ground. This allowed bedrooms at the ground level to
borrow light and ventilation across a stair void and a
sunken courtyard. There are two front doors which allow
bedrooms to be double as home office space with their own
entry. A steel screen provides security, privacy and
ventilation.

All work is proposed to ensure maximum benefit for the
budget. No work, except for a dormer, is proposed to the

Our client did not want an open plan, but wanted new rooms to respond
in size and scale to the existing house.
The yard was more than 3m lower than the principle rooms. The
addition gradually steps down to a lawn above a new garage. The level
change between this lawn and the pool allows the pool fence to be set
lower than the level of the lawn.

House AM, Gladesville
New dwelling
Our client required a family home, but he also wanted to
display powerful motorbikes and effectively wanted a
nightclub at the lower level.
The house was designed to be constructed out of insulated
pre-cast wall panels with in-situ floor and roof slabs.
The view to the Parramatta River is to the South. Skylights
were introduced to provide Northern light and to illuminate
the folded roof plane. Courtyards provide direct access to
external areas, away from inclement weather. Principle south
facing windows are fixed single panes to limit obstruction
from the view. The arrangement of the rooms directs one's
gaze to the view but also allows conventional furniture
arrangements.

Australia St, Newtown
Alterations to a terrace in Newtown
The house was large enough, but was pokey and badly connected to the
yard. It did have a roof deck with views across the roofscape of
Newtown. We moved the kitchen to the front room to better connect
the front door and street, dropped the living room to the garden
level and opened it to the yard. It had been suggested that the roof
deck might be converted to another bedroom, but this exceeded my
clients’ requirements and once deleted, planning controls would not
permit its reconstruction. It’s a beautiful, private spot.

Additions & alterations to a terrace house
The daughter of a former client approached us to design
alterations to a small terrace house down the street from
her parent's house. The existing terrace was very small with
several quirks including an attic accessed only via a stair
off the bathroom. We hoped to retain some of the qualities
of the existing house deliberately keeping some of the rooms
cosy and the attic accessible only via a fixed ladder. A
small courtyard separates the kitchen from the back room,
but the sash windows slide up to the level above providing
an open plan with good cross ventilation in appropriate
weather and as the occasion demands.

Additions to a terrace house
Sketch design
My brother found this place.
It was a large freestanding terrace in Alexandria.
I did a quick sketch to try to encourge him to buy it.
The house had so much character that you'd leave it largely
intact, wallpaper and all.
Just build a new room around a courtyard out the back.
Make the carport double as a covered terrace.
He didn't buy it. It didn't happen. Would have been great.
